Minnesota Taconite Workers Health Study Fact Sheet Background . Beginning in the mid-1980s, the University of Minnesota School of Public Health researchers were involved in identifying potential health issues among Iron Range workers. Some 70,000 individuals, all working for one year or more in the taconite industry sometime between 1952 and ...
In Mountain Iron, Minnesota, in the heart of the state's Iron Range, University of Minnesota researchers confirmed an association between time spent working ...
This is the second update of a study of 3,444 taconite miners and millers who were first exposed to taconite, with associated exposures to silica and nonasbestiform amphiboles, in the period 1947 through 1958. Previous analyses of deaths through 1977, and again through 1983, showed no significant excess deaths from any specific causes.

A new study has just definitively linked the taconite industry itself to a 3 percent increased risk of mesothelioma — a risk that increases with cumulative exposure in the workplace. Taconite is an iron-bearing sedimentary rock which contains finely dispersed iron oxide which can be refined into usable iron.
The study, which was not designed to research cardiovascular disease, recommended Iron Range communities and the mining companies increase their efforts to control risk factors like high blood pressure and smoking. The study found that almost two-thirds of all taconite miners were either current or former smokers.

extract the iron from the rock. Therefore, based on the examination of the costs and benefits of mining in this particular area along with the study of related cases, the mining of taconite iron in northern Wisconsin is inadvisable at this time. Taconite Mining Process Benefits of Mining
is an iron bearing, high silica, flint like rock. It is a Precambrian sedimentary rock referred to as a banded iron formation due to the typical alternating iron rich layers and shale or chert layers. The very finely dispersed iron content,…
The majority of historical iron mining activities in Wisconsin involved the removal of high-grade (direct-shipping) ore, which was mined in several areas throughout the state. The major remaining deposits are taconite, a low-grade (typically 20-30% iron) ore that requires processing to increase the iron content and remove impurities.

The risk of getting mesothelioma cancer increased 3 percent for each year working in the taconite mining industry within the Iron Range region of Minnesota, according to an extensive, five-year $5 million study.. Taconite is a hard-banded, low grade ore used mostly in the iron and steel industries and has been mined extensively in the Northeast portion of the state.
Study design and population. We conducted a nested case–control study of mesothelioma in a cohort of iron mining workers. This work was one of several studies undertaken as part of the Taconite Workers Health Study, which also included an occupational exposure assessment, mortality analysis and studies of lung cancer and non-malignant lung disease.
Funding for the taconite aggregate resource study is provided by grants from Department of Commerce, Economic Department of Administration with additional support from the Permanent University Trust Fund, Iron Range Resources, Minnesota Power, the Blandin Foundation, and Minnesota Technology, Inc. This project is part of the larger study.
The purpose of this paper was to assess the role of non-asbestiform amphibole EMPs in the etiology of mesotheliomas and other lung disease in taconite (iron ore) miners. Increased mesothelioma rates have been described in Minnesota taconite workers since the late 1990s. Currently, over 100 cases hav …
This study provides evidence that taconite workers may be at increased risk for mortality from lung cancer, mesothelioma, and some cardiovascular disease. Occupational exposures during taconite mining operations may be associated with these increased risks, …
His wife, Judy, did the same at the University of Minnesota's suite of offices at ia Regional Medical Center — and now both will wait until the University of Minnesota compiles the results of their voluntary testing as part of the Taconite Worker Health Study. Sam Rickes worked for more than 35 years at the Eveleth Taconite plant near ...
Taconite Dreams is a great example of how, when undertaken intelligently, local historical studies can have global reach. Jeffrey T. Manuel provides a mirror for communities across the world, from the mining regions of South Africa to the oil fields of North Dakota, through which they can assess the opportunities and threats contained in economic development strategies that rely on extractive ...
As part of its ongoing participation with a U of MN study of respiratory health issues in Minnesota taconite workers, the MDH has identified four additional cases of mesothelioma in a group of 69,000 people who worked in the state's iron mining industry between the 1930s and 1982.
Taconite Rocks! is a comprehensive curriculum developed by educators on Minnesota's Iron Range to be used in sixth-grade classes. Combining science, language skills, mathematics and social studies, Taconite Rocks! offers a number of modules that can be used in a variety of classroom settings.
Mining and processing of taconite iron ore generate exposures that include elongate mineral particles (EMPs) of amphibole and non-amphibole origin. We conducted a nested case-control study of mesothelioma in a cohort of 68,737 iron ore miners (haematite and taconite ore miners) to evaluate the association between mesothelioma, employment and ...

In an effort to fully understand the solar potential across City of Mountain Iron's facilities and beyond, staff worked with a consultant to produce a Renewable Mountain Iron report that provides building benchmarking, solar suitability, and solar PV designs and budgets where it makes sense. We chatted with Craig Wainio, City Administrator with Mountain Iron, to learn more about the city's plan.
In the range of content of taconite used in this study, TC gradually increased with increased taconite. The results of the study showed that the presence of taconite improved the healing property of asphalt mastic. For a healing time of 900 s, a loading strain of 5%, and degree of damage of 50%, an increased dosage of taconite led to an ...
Taconite is a flint-like type of rock containing low-grade iron ore. Vast reserves of taconite, with iron concentrations of 30-50%, were discovered in 1870 near present-day Babbitt, on the Mesabi Iron Range.
SKF Taconite Seal designation system and selection guide All SKF Taconite Seals have the designation preix TK. The seals can be ordered in metric or inch dimensions. An SKF Taconite Seal can be ordered as an individual item for metric or inch dimensions or as part of a kit with the SAF, SAF B, SAW, SAFD and SDAF inch housings (table 1).
Minnesota Taconite Workers Health Study Key questions: 1. What is the relationship of working in the taconite industry to the excess number of cases of mesothelioma? 2. Are other diseases, respiratory and non-respiratory, associated with work in the taconite industry? 3. …
Objectives: An excess of mesothelioma has been observed in iron ore miners in Northeastern Minnesota. Mining and processing of taconite iron ore generate exposures that include elongate mineral particles (EMPs) of amphibole and non-amphibole origin. We conducted a nested case-control study of mesothelioma in a cohort of 68 737 iron ore miners ...
In this study of Minnesota taconite iron ore miners, an overall higher than expected mortality rate from all causes was observed among taconite workers. Specifically, elevated causes of death from respiratory cancers (including lung cancer and mesothelioma) and cardiovascular disease (including hypertensive heart disease and ischemic heart ...

Though taconite was identified as an iron-bearing rock on the Iron Ranges of northern Minnesota long before the 1950s, it wasn't until then that it was profitably extracted, processed, and shipped to steel mills on the Great Lakes. As natural ore reserves were diminished, taconite became an alternative source of iron that allowed the Iron Range to continue mining operations in a changing ...
Based on the promoting effect of metal material on the healing property of asphalt binder, this study evaluated the merits of using taconite (an iron-containing filler from iron-mine tailings) to ...
